The Zippin Pippin has started reaching for the sky. The first structural supports are now in place. The area being built in the pictures below is the loading/unloading area. If you look closely you can see the supports are slightly higher on the left than on the right (click on the picture to have a higher resolution view). After loading and the brakes releasing the cars would move slowly to the right in this picture.
The footings in the foreground of this picture will be for the lift hill
This next view is looking straight down the same supports, the cars would be facing us in this view looking west, the lift hill will eventually be to the left and the first drop would be to the right. You can see in this view that they are starting to backfill in around the foundation.
The next shot is a close up from the same vantage point. Note how the X braces further in the background are getting taller...
Assembling the tallest sections 70' above the ground should not be a problem for this crane, here it is being used to add another component.
These next few images show other support structures being built on the ground waiting to be put into place. Some of the ones being built are quite a bit taller than the ones that are in place, hopefully we'll start seeing the lift hill and first drop going into place soon.
This next close up shows how parts are spliced together with 2 plates and 8 bolts, the smaller plate with three holes is used to hold supports that connect these structures together once they are set in place.
The area that will be the tallest part of the coaster has been excavated relatively deep and is being backfilled slightly this appears to be in preparation for foundation work in this area in the near future.
This next view is looking straight down the standing structure from the other side looking east, towards the giant slide and the bay. It was a beautiful crisp fall day.
So a very exciting week of progress at the construction site, things are really starting to take shape! Some of these pictures look much better if you click on them and go right to the photo album, the photo album also has more pictures than are shown here.
