Construction Update 10/29/10

Last weekend in Green Bay was very rainy and the first half of the week was very windy, the weather caused some issues for the overall construction effort.  The team estimates they lost about a days worth of work, despite that many advancements were made.  Here are the details.

The structure for turn 1 and turn 3 is now complete.

Turn 1 is hidden inside of the structure for turn 3, if you look closely you can see the drop after turn 3 is just starting to take shape, later we'll see the beginnings of the lift hill. Turn 1 and turn 3 share the same structure, the lift hill and the first drop after turn 3 also share the same structure. In the picture below the lift hill uses the left half of the structure.

Just behind me when this picture was taken sits the lift motor, gearbox, and sprockets that will power the lift chain which were added this week. These are used components but they appear to be in like new condition.

Just to the north of this location the deck is being added to the loading framework that was added last week.

Standing at the future loading platform and looking up at the most recently completed structure put the camera lens right into the noon day sun and also shows the beginning of the drop after turn 3.

Turning to the East and looking back at the brake run we see the first layer of the track boards are being added to the structure in many locations.

Turning back around we can see the start of the ride, a short downhill to carry us around turn 1 and into the lift hill.

A quick walk over to the bottom of the first drop and looking in both directions shows the first layer of track being added on these hills. Several other layers of these boards will be added and capped with a steel plate for the trains to run on.

The foundation work for turn 2 is waiting for the first structure to be added to it. Just looking at the foundation you can see there is a lot going on in this area, the structure for turn 2 along with intersecting structure for the final break run which will go right through this structure is here along with the structure that will carry the trains to the out and back portion of the ride.

This week we also see the first foundation work extending into zone 3, the out and back portion of the roller coaster, the foundation shown below will support the train returning from the out and back and entering the final brake run.

The earth moving is getting even more intense at the furthest reaches of zone 3, they were busy excavating and backfilling in preparation for footings to continue out to the furthest reach of the ride.

This view looking North East gives a great overview of the current standing structure.

In addition to the lift motor showing up on site one of the trolleys that will support the track in the transfer area was also spotted being prepped on site. Note the v-shaped rollers that will engage the structural elements we saw in the transfer area last week.

Even though a day was lost to weather this week overall the construction teams feel they are ahead of pace at this point of the construction. It appears they worked ahead on constructing bents to put into place when the weather slowed the progress of erecting the structure, this week there was by far the most bents waiting to be put into place that I have seen during my visits.

The structure of turn 1 and 3 is very impressive to view, here is a close up standing at the inside of these turns looking outward to the East.

That completes the tour of the site for this week, as always click on any of the images above to go to the photo album and see the pictures in a higher resolution.  Be sure to check back next week for the latest progress.
